Two of the largest school districts in Kansas, USD #500 (Kansas City, KS)
and USD #250 (Wichita, KS), requested that we put together a curriculum that
would
offer their teachers best practices and teaching strategies in ESL that could
be
site-specific and address the needs of an increasing population of English
Language Learners in Kansas City and Wichita.
These districts also need us to prepare their teachers to pass the PRAXIS
II assessment required for ESL Licensure in Kansas. Kansas State University
College of Education met that challenge with APPLi+1.
The features of this 15-hour program include:
- Book study format led by local instructional coaches trained and supported
by KSU through 12.5 hours of staff development.
- Assignments include small group discussion, artifacts, reflection journals,
videotaped classroom strategies, and structured classroom walkthroughs by
KSU faculty to evaluate and support local teachers.
- On-going coaching from district staff members who have been trained at
KSU, as well as support from KSU faculty.
This program is assisting these districts as they strive to comply with NCLB
requirements, but more importantly offers teachers the skills they
need to deliver content to culturally and linguistically diverse students
so they can participate in classroom instruction. |
