CLASSIC ESL MODEL

The CLASSIC (Critically Reflective, Lifelong Advocacy for Second Language Learners, Site-Specific, Innovation, and Cross-Cultural Competency) model is an evidence-based, standards-driven ESL endorsement program aligned with TESOL, NCATE, and Kansas State Standards. It has been successfully implemented by eight universities and 100 school districts across the U.S. to enhance teachers' capacity to serve English Language Learners (ELLs).

Key Features:

  • Critically Reflective: Encourages educators to reflect on their own experiences and beliefs to better understand and meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Lifelong Learning: Equips educators to stay current with evolving educational research and theory.
  • Advocacy: Empowers teachers to become advocates for ELL students and their families.
  • Site-Specific: Tailored solutions that address the unique needs of schools and districts.
  • Innovation: Emphasizes collaboration, critical reflection, and up-to-date research in teaching practices.
  • Cross-Cultural Competence: Promotes ongoing growth in multicultural awareness and understanding.

Since 1999, CLASSIC has delivered high-quality professional development aligned with national teaching standards (TESOL, CREDE, NBPTS). The program is designed to improve ELL student outcomes through research-based, innovative approaches to professional learning.

Domestic Partnerships: CIMA’s CLASSIC program has partnered with institutions like Colorado State University, University of Arkansas, University of Georgia, Eastern New Mexico University, and Morningside College to replicate and expand its successful model nationwide.
