Migrant Education
Migrant Education is vital in overcoming challenges for students from migrant and seasonal farm work backgrounds. These students often face unique educational barriers, including frequent relocation, language differences, and limited access to consistent schooling. Through specialized programs, migrant students receive the support they need to overcome these challenges, complete their education, and pursue further academic and career opportunities. Kansas State University’s Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) is proud to offer key programs that support these students: the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) and the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).
High School Equivalency Program (HEP)
Kansas State University’s High School Equivalency Program (HEP) was established in 2001 to help students from migrant and seasonal farm work backgrounds achieve their high school equivalency diploma. Since its inception, K-State HEP has served over 1,800 students from migrant and Seasonal Farmwork backgrounds. Over 1,200 of those students have completed a GED. Over 90% all GED recipients have either improved their employment, entered the military, or enrolled in postsecondary education. HEP collaborates with various recruitment partners, including state departments, local school districts, and community organizations, to connect with students in need. The program operates across Kansas and Colorado and partners with Colorado State University, Pueblo.
College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)
Established in 2009, Kansas State University’s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) supports first-year migrant students in their pursuit of higher education. Over 700 students have benefited from the program, with 250 having completed their postsecondary degrees. CAMP is offered at three key sites: Kansas State University, Garden City Community College, and Colorado State University Pueblo.
CAMP Services Include:
- Recruitment: Each year, CAMP recruits 40 high school seniors from Kansas and Colorado to enroll at one of the participating institutions.
- Financial Support: Scholarships help cover tuition, fees, housing, and other education-related expenses during students' freshman year.
- Academic Counseling and Tutoring: CAMP staff provide ongoing academic guidance, and tutoring services help students succeed in their coursework.
- Career and Skill Development: Weekly seminars focus on career exploration, study skills, and college success strategies.
- Social and Emotional Support: Students receive emotional and social guidance through peer mentoring, group activities, and personalized advising.
- Cultural Engagement: Students are encouraged to participate in cultural events, celebrations, and university activities, fostering a sense of belonging and community.
Through CAMP, migrant students receive the resources they need to succeed academically and personally as they navigate the challenges of higher education.
