Secondary Education Field Experiences

The secondary education program prepares you to teach in grades six through twelve (high schools, junior high schools, and middle schools). Secondary teachers prepare to teach in one or more content areas. Critical and analytical thinking, careful and thoughtful communication, and a desire to explore, question, and solve problems are promoted in the secondary education major.

Teaching as a Career and Early Field Experience are designed to give students a broad perspective of the teaching profession. Students engage in 40 hours of supervised field experiences examining selected aspects of teaching and the learning environment, including students and learning, content and pedagogy, planning, instruction, and professionalism.

Block 1/A offers students the opportunity to explore the teaching profession through engaging in service learning opportunities. Students examine instructional planning, differentiating instruction, direct and indirect instructional strategies, strategies to promote student understanding, managing lesson delivery, classroom management, assessing student performance, and working with colleagues and parents.

During Block 2, students will continue to develop their content pedagogy and practice. They will examine principles of teaching applied to their content in the secondary and middle schools including: motivation, organization of subject matter, lesson/unit planning, assessment and reporting, organization and management of the classroom, and methodology and materials of the secondary and middle schools.

As the capstone semester of the secondary education program, student teaching candidates are immersed in the teaching profession during a 16-week, full-time field experience.
