Halley Asbury
Hometown: Wamego, KS
Institution transferred from: Highland Community College
Major: Elementary Education
Why did you choose K-State and your major?
I chose K-State because I was raised wearing purple! I have always loved K-State, and I quite literally grew up in Bluemont Hall. When my mom was a student here, I would go with her to education classes. Coming from a family of educators, I have always been around students. I knew the education department at K-State was great, so it was a win-win when I decided to transfer here.
What organizations are you involved in, and how did they help you find community?
I’m a College of Education ambassador. The ambassador experience has helped me connect with other students who are in different blocks and helped me network with future EdCats! I’m also in the National Society of Leadership and Success, which has helped me network with other students who aren’t in the College of Education.
What has been one of your favorite experiences at K-State?
The Education Symposium was one of my favorite experiences. Seeing the presentation for the Kansas Teacher of the Year team gave me different perspectives on teaching. I got to network with different districts across the state of Kansas, and it was great to see what they all have to offer teachers.
How do you think your experiences, classes and professors are preparing you for the transition into your career?
I think the professors give us as many resources as possible to make sure we are prepared. They also provide us with many opportunities to go into the classroom and get the most experience we can at different schools and grade levels.
What do you think sets K-State apart from other universities?
Community. I have never met someone who isn’t friendly on campus. We are a family, not just a university. Everyone helps each other when they need it.
What’s the atmosphere like in the College of Education?
The atmosphere is very tight-knit. Everyone knows each other once you get into blocks. We have the most understanding, friendly professors, and even when you’re no longer in their classes, they still check up on you. Everyone is personable and willing to help you reach your goals.
To prospective students: K-State is the place to become a successful and supported educator. The COED is a family, and they give you every opportunity to go into the classroom to be prepared before student teaching. You will find your home and best friends here.
