ā Why did you choose K-State?
I wasnāt planning to visit K-State at all. I grew up a KU fan through and through, but I toured K-State on a whim. I had been a substitute teacher while attending Coffeyville Community College, so I decided to check out the College of Education.
It was during the summer, but I just loved it. I felt like everybody knew me somehow, even though Iād never met them. When I walked in, Dr. Roger Schieferecke, assistant dean and director, knew me by my first name. It was pretty great. It felt like family.
ā How was the transition from community college to K-State?
Coffeyville Community College was tiny. I had a community there, but it was nothing compared to the College of Education, let alone K-State.
It was a huge eye-opener. At Coffeyville, walking between two buildings was basically the whole campus. Here, I might have to walk 20 minutes to get somewhere!
Even though K-State is pretty big, it feels like I know a lot more people than I did at Coffeyville. Iāll walk to class and see someone I know.
ā What organizations are you involved in?
ā Iām an ambassador for the College of Education. I get to talk with future and prospective students and try to sell them on K-State, which isnāt hard to do.
ā Iām also involved in Call Me MISTER. Itās a great opportunity to learn how to be a mentor and leader in the classroom. We also get to visit different school districts.
We were recently in a rural district with graduating classes of just 20ā40 students. Next, weāre going to a much larger district in the Kansas City area. The organization really lets you experience a lot of different settings and gets your feet wet in a lot of different areas.
Outside of K-State, I work for a golf course. Businesses in Manhattan really work with students to plan around their schedules.
ā What is the atmosphere like in the College of Education?
It feels like a tight-knit group. It feels like home, like a family.
You feel like you know everyone there, no matter their title. You also feel like everyone knows you, which is a pretty cool feeling.
ā What would you say to students considering K-Stateās College of Education?
Everybody treats you like family, and youāre not just a number. Everyone says that, but K-State actually means it.
Sometimes your family might not understand why you want to major in education. You should listen to your family, but at the end of the day, do what you want to do.
Do what sounds best for you and what fits your personality the most.
