Jordyn Fleckenstein
Hometown: Jennings, KS
Institution transferred from: Kansas Weslyan
Major: Pyschical Education and Health
Why did you choose K-State and your major?
When I looked at transferring to K-State, I really liked the program, and I liked the people who introduced me to the school, walked me around campus and introduced me to the education program. I liked the amount of technology that the education program has.
What do you think sets K-State apart from other universities?
Technology is a big thing, and also having the Catalyst to have somewhere specifically for education students to hang out and access a bunch of resources. I think that definitely helps.
What advice would you give to your younger self if they had questions about picking K-State or your major?
I would say to not let other people influence you not to do education because it is a tougher profession to go into right now. I’m just following my heart, because I didn't start in education. I started in personal training.
If you were talking to a prospective transfer student about enrolling in the College of Education, what would you tell them?
I would tell them to absolutely do it. I came in as a late transfer, and they still push you to get into the classes you need, so you don't have to stress about that. The College of Education is really good about getting you into those classes as a transfer because they know that to stay on track, you need to be in them. It's [the environment] very friendly and family-like. Everybody loves it, and it's a great atmosphere. It's always positive.
What/Who has been your favorite course or professor at K-State? Why?
I love all of Dr. Ellner's classes. He's great. I have him for most of them right now, because I am in my [core] Physical Education classes [for the degree]. He's super laid back, and we do a lot of hands-on stuff in his classes rather than just doing papers or learning that way. I guess it's just really nice that he has us learn that way. My favorite class is probably my Intro to Physical Education class, which is with him [Dr. Ellner].
What are your plans after graduating from K-State?
I plan to either head back toward home or to another smaller school. That’s kind of what I'm thinking right now. I want to do K-12 if I'm at a smaller school so I can have a wide variety of Physical Education students.
How do you think your experiences, classes and professors are preparing you for the transition from college to career?
I love that we get experiences at schools. In one of my classes this semester, we went to an elementary school and actually got to teach the kids. It’s nice to have hands-on experience early on. I'm only a sophomore, and we're still getting out in our classes to teach kids because it's different from teaching our classmates. Teaching actual elementary kids versus teaching other 20-year-olds is completely different on the behavior side of things and getting that interaction. I feel like it really helps transition us out to the profession.
