Richard G. Hause Creativity Lecture:
Education Symposium
Since 1988, students representing the College of Education have organized and held an exceptionally well-received symposium as a major professional development activity. This conference-style event allows students to sit in on lectures led by K-State staff and faculty, as well as other leaders in the field. Each year, the planning team chooses an overarching theme for the year and which presenters will discuss the different aspects of that theme. After lunch, we will showcase a documentary created by the College of Education.
The Hause Creativity / Program Series began as a tribute by former students to honor the late Dr. Richard Hause when he retired from Kansas State University in 1995. Dr. Hause was a professor of Curriculum and Instruction who developed and taught a graduate level creativity course. Since the inception, the Hause program has been held in conjunction with the annual K-State Education Symposium.
The 2022 edition of Education Symposium will be held on Thursday, October 13th with the theme: Teaching Diverse Learners Within Diverse Environments. During this event, we will explore diversity in many different facets based on The College of Education Diversity Proficiencies. The general layout for the day is available at the bottom of this page, along with a list of session topics, presenters, and descriptions of presentations.
Registration
Registration for the 2022 Education Symposium has closed. Check back next fall for information on the 2023 Symposium!
Attendees will gain 8 hours of professional development for attending the event either in-person or online. In-person students are highly encouraged to attend the event in person. An online option is available for our global students. If you are an in-person student who would like to observe the event online, please email the event coordination EdSymposium@ksu.edu.
Those who want to attend the event in person can pay an additional $10 to gain access to the online resources; This will allow you to re-watch any sessions you enjoyed or view any sessions you didn’t get to see in person. If you would like these resources, you can add this on by using the same link you used to register!
Important Dates
Registration for the 2022 Education Symposium opens Tuesday, September 6th, and registration for in-person attendees will close at noon on Wednesday, October 12th. The in-person event will be held at the K-State Student Union on Thursday, October 13th.
This year attendees also have the opportunity to attend the event virtually. Online attendees will be added to a Canvas page and will gain access to videos of the presentations on Wednesday, October 19th. Registration for online access opens on September 6th but closes at noon on Wednesday, October 26th at noon.
Individuals who register for online access will have the ability to watch those videos until Midnight on Sunday, November 13th.

Constant Natural Freedom of Movement: Movement Strategies to Engage Learning

This presentation describes outcomes developed through a grounded theory research, Constant Natural Freedom of Movement. The theory provides that for physical activity to effectively impact learning, it arises as a constant natural part of the school day. The session will present data-driven strategies to spark constant and natural physical activity opportunities to engage and enhance the learning experience.

They face many of the same challenges that non-military families do, however they also have unique challenges that are a part of being a military spouse or child. Learning to Stress Better: Changing our Mindset about Stress
Presented by: Dr. Dan Wilcox
Few in our culture would disagree with the statement, “stress is bad for me.” Headlines like, “Stress can Make You Sick” or “Work Related Stress Can Kill” only reinforce this stress is debilitating mindset. What we may not know and what’s harder to recognize is how we’ve benefited from stress. Over a decade of research has demonstrated how it’s not the type or amount of stress that determines its effects. In many cases what matters most is whether we believe that stress is all bad or detrimental or that stress can also be good and enhancing. The purpose of this presentation is to arm future educators with a different mindset, a stress is enhancing mindset.

Beyond Fences and Fields
Rural Education is a vital part of the United States educational system but often gets overlooked. In Beyond Fences and Fields, we capture the stories of three rural school districts across Kansas. While each districts situation is unique, they all show the power that educators can have in supporting and growing rural communities. They also show us what makes these communities such great places to live and teach in.
- Adapt instruction to different learning styles,
- Connect instruction or services to students' experiences and cultures,
- Communicate with students and families in culturally sensitive ways,
- Incorporate multiple perspectives into teaching,
- Develop a classroom climate that celebrates diversity, and
- Demonstrate behaviors consistent with the ideas of fairness and the belief that all students can learn.
Registered attendees will be able to receive a refund of their registration fee or alter their method of attending the event if they contact the Event Coordinator before Wednesday, September 28th at 2:00pm. The Education Symposium is a self-supporting event, therefore the registration fees received from registered attendees goes towards the cost of the planned activities. Attendees who wish to change any piece of their registration after September 28th will incur a $10 alteration fee.
Please consider this carefully when registering.
Fees will not be canceled or altered for registered participants who do not attend or do not attend the entire event.
